With the improvement of the standard of living in mid-20th century, the cars quickly transformed from luxury goods to an every-day necessity. In 1955, factory Crvena Zastava in Kragujevac began producing cars under the licence of Italian car factory Fiat. Out of the several models that the Factory had produced, Zastava 600d, later 750 and 850, more commonly known as Fića, was the most affordable and the best-seller. It quickly gained the status of a national symbol and we could say that it had motorised the entire former Yugoslavia. Before 1985, when the production of Fića came to a halt, the Factory produced over one million of them.
Fića weighted 605 kg, the capacity of the engine was 750 cm3, strength 28 hp with maximum of 4,000 rph. The engine was four-stroke, with water-cooling and four-speed gearbox. Its maximum speed was 105 km/h and it used between 6 and 8 litres of fuel per 100 km.
It was used as an official vehicle by the police, military, firefighters, ambulance and post. Fića with an “upgraded” engine was also the most popular car in the National Class auto racing league.
Today, in the countries of former Yugoslavia, there are still around 20,000 registered Fićas, there are numerous active fan clubs and well-restored cars can reach very high prices in the market.
